Francesco Snote answers the questions of
Irina Zucca Alessandrelli, curator of the Ramo Collection

What does drawing mean to you?
Drawing is the skeletal structure of observation and a school of intimate truths. It is the mystical and mischievous work of reaching the incandescent core. Sometimes a few strokes are enough to steal the fire.

What materials, techniques, and creative processes do you use when working on paper?
I work with any tool or material capable of leaving a mark, not only graphite and charcoal. I add and subtract by incising, rather than erasing, wherever I deem it necessary. At times, I soften the surface using encaustic, with heated wax and pigments.

Why did you choose this work from the Ramo Collection?
I chose this work because I believe it has the ability to gently tame those who look at it. It has a pulse, with love.

What value does your dialogue with the Masters of the 20th century hold for you?
It is essential and fundamental, since the return of the repressed is part of my practice.

FRANCESCO SNOTE (b. 1991, Biella, Italy) lives and works in Sordevolo (BI). He graduated in 2018 from the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin. His practice focuses on drawing and sculpture, through which he constructs a reciprocal relationship between visible and invisible elements. His work unfolds as a ritual and propitiatory orchestration, connected to the idea of the uncanny as the resurfacing of repressed images.
