Slawomir Elsner answers questions
from Irina Zucca Alessandrelli, curator of Collezione Ramo

What does drawing mean to you?
The possibility of visualizing a thought, something still open, while also exploring its limits.

What materials, techniques, and creative processes do you use when working on paper?
I mainly work with colored pencils and watercolors, the stepchildren of art history.

Why did you choose this work from Collezione Ramo?
This work focuses on a hatching technique that I use in all my colored pencil drawings.
I am enchanted by blue and have a deep appreciation for the work of Piero Dorazio.

What value does dialogue with the Masters of the 20th century have for you?
Every image challenges us to recall our expectations and our openness to visual experience and perception. How much do we project, and how much do we truly perceive?

SLAWOMIR ELSNER (Wodzisław, Poland, 1976) lives and works in Berlin. His research is distinguished by the original and experimental use of watercolor and colored pencil techniques. Through a meticulous process of layering marks and color fields, the artist creates images that appear out of focus. This visual effect transforms realistic subjects—drawn from reproductions of old paintings or photographs—into new abstract works, revealing their internal structure, rhythm, and underlying formal balance.
